Discovering Authentic Happiness: What it is and How to Know If it is Real
Happiness – this is perhaps what many of us would like to achieve. In anything we do, we are fueled by our desire to achieve our end goal, which is expected to result into contentment, and consequently, being happy. However, the pursuit of happiness is not going to be an easy one. It is going to be challenging, and there can be hindrances along the way. It is important to know authentic happiness, not only with regards to what it actually is, but also to know if the happiness you are feeling is genuine or superficial.
What is Authentic Happiness?
The theory relating to authentic happiness has been introduced by Martin Seligman in a book he wrote in 2003. He is also known to be the father of Positive Psychology, which is said to be one of the necessary elements of genuine happiness. This kind of happiness, according to Seligman, can be achieved through three different factors, with the first one being positive emotion. The latter refers to what we feel and how we feel. To be happy, you should draw more positive emotions in your life. The second element is known as engagement, which basically refers to flow, presence or state. This refers to being one or being absorbed with a specific activity, such as listening to music or playing any sport. Lastly, authentic happiness is also all about meaning. This refers to finding the purpose in your life and in everything that you do. Once you have found your purpose, it is more possible to achieve happiness in its most genuine state.
How to know if Happiness is Authentic
To be able to know whether the happiness you are feeling is authentic or not, one of the first things you should know is the fact that happiness can be generally categorized into two. The first one is known as conditional happiness, which is basically all about having pleasurable experiences or being happy as things are going the way you want it to be. On the other hand, authentic happiness is not dependent on external factors. It is the joy from within, which is hard to be matched with any superficial feeling.
In a nutshell, while there are many things that will contribute to authentic happiness, one of the most important would be finding meaning from what you do. It is the sense of fulfillment from any activity, not only through pleasure, but through meaning. Positive emotions from the past, present, and future will be important for true happiness, as well as advancing the development of mankind. To live an authentically happy life, you need to have a pleasant life, a good life, and meaningful life.
